Anne Frank: The diary of a young girl (2000, p. 150)

Poem

Workbook:

  • Provide an argument as to why Anna’s voice is valuable when considering the historical, cultural and societal perspectives of World War II. Consider:
    • What are her focus topics?
    • What level of detail does she provide about those topics?
    • Justify why you think she has a style of voice (logos / pathos/ ethos).
    • Her childlike mannerisms when referring to a situation lift it from the realities seen by the adults – why is that important when gaining perspective?
    • Why is there a tone of freedom/hope in her voice?
    • How does this tone contrast with the reality? – Here you will have to synthesis your knowledge of how her voice (style and tone) is contrasted to the sombre reality of the world around her. Use Primo Levi’s poem to support your thinking.
    • GOING FURTHER – What argument is there that Anne presents with a duality of both optimism and pessimism? Think about how she refers to herself (p. 332)
